Overview

PHILA FPU 25/15 is a long lasting, non-toxic, Biocide Free, easy-cleaning coating for protecting boat and ship hulls & propellers from fouling by marine organisms. It is fully compliant with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), resolution to phase out tin-based toxins by January 1, 2003. This white paper provides background information about this new strategy (which is called a fouling release coating) and how it compares to traditional, toxic anti-fouling paints. Much of the information in this paper is derived from work published by the Naval Research Laboratory. Expected service life period up to 120 months. PHILA FPU 25/15 displays very good compatibility with various well known producers.

Purpose

Marine organisms that colonize a ship’s hull produce both hard and soft fouling. Soft Fouling organisms include: Slime (bacteria, diatoms), Algae and grasses, and soft organisms (hydroids, sponges, tunicates). Hard Fouling organisms include: Annelids, bryozoans, barnacles, and mollusks. Fouling increases weight and drag, which decrease a ship’s speed, maneuverability, and range. Fouling increases propulsive fuel consumption by as much as 30%. There are two types of coating that minimize the fouling damage: traditional, but toxic, anti-fouling paints, and new, non-toxic anti-fouling i.e., fouling-release coatings. The following table gives a quick summary of how the approaches compare: Anti-fouling traditional Mechanism: Produces a toxic surface that weakens or kills the organism. Minimizes growth, easy to clean. Polluting (possible legal problems): Yes. Environmental restrictions are imminent. Reduces Drag: No Fouling Release FPU 25/15 Mechanism: Produces a super-slick, hard, surface that weakens the organism’s attachment to the surface. Slick, hard surface cleans in less time and resists solvents.

Application Data

Mixing Ratio: Single pack product which should be stirred well before application by stirring machine.

Thinner: Not recommended. The material is ready for use, under special conditions use Thinner PH 400, max 5% by volume.

Painting Method: Airless spraying is our recommendation, brush, and spray follows. Tip range 0.46mm-0.66mm and 0.66-0.79, blowing pressure shouldn’t be less than 141kg/cm2 (2000psi). May be required to add thinner. Use the proper equipment. Actual safety measures and precautions are very important from the selected method and environment work. Drying and Over-Coating Conditions

Coating Specification

PHILA FPU 25/15 should always be applied to a recommended coating system. The surface should be dry and free from contamination of any existing layers of PHILADUR line, link coat/sealers or various A/Fs, in order to secure good adhesion and good A/F performance. Specific recommendations and statements should be agreed and approved by Phila Coatings (USA) Inc. Technical Department in writing to do so,  as there is a Limit liability only for the supplied quantity and value of the A/F

Surface Preparation

All surfaces should be clean, dry and free ofcontamination. High pressure or pressure with fresh water wash should be applied prior to the treatment or of the application. For other surface treatments, please consult with Phila Coatings (USA) Inc.

Storage

Circa 24 months at 20°C, stored at dry, shaded and ventilated condition. The container/paint, must be kept sealed and away from heat and ignition.

Pack Size

5 Gal. (18,9 Lit) drum, 20 Lit drum. If other packing specifications are needed, please consult with Phila Coatings (USA) Inc.
